STUCK IN A RUT?

SURVIVAL TIPS TO SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY

By Rich Fricke

As outdoorsmen, more often than not, we find ourselves on the road-less-traveled in seeking our own fly-fishing Nirvana – usually found at the end of a dirt road. Our recent unpredictable weather in the Sierra is a clear sign that we need to be prepared for the worst before we head North on the 395.

Keep in mind, once you’re “off-road” (beyond the campground) in most cases AAA will not come to your aid, as you will need “Special Off-Road Assistance” from a 4×4 tow truck. This service will not be timely,  can easily be deferred to the following day depending on the weather, and will come at great expense.

With this in mind, it’s easy to increase your chances of being able to help yourself – if not others – by making your own “Off-Road Backpack” (nearly all from Harbor Freight).

This is to supplement your standard tool kit.  Here is a partial basic list to get started:

1)  Viking Lithium Jumping Device  https://tinyurl.com/yc37berz
Phenomenal device will allow you to jump your own battery without another car – charge your cell phone or other USB enabled device. There are similar units, however, this one is Sierra Pacific Member tested. A dead battery at the Owens on Chalk Bluff Rd. was jumped and car driven back into Bishop in less than one hour.

2) Tow Strap https://tinyurl.com/ym9hpw34

3) Jumper Cables  https://tinyurl.com/2jufpp74

4) Gloves – this or similar –  https://tinyurl.com/5n74hrhv

5) Vice Grips –  needle nose & regular (no replacement for the correct tool or tool kit, but in a pinch this type will do) https://tinyurl.com/2p8jfar7

6) Fix-A-flat (can) –  https://tinyurl.com/296ej26z  (also watch video here)

Buy two for LARGE tires. Even if you were to catch a ride with someone else, – and take your 4×4 backpack – off-road tires are ALWAYS B I G.

7) Headlight Flashlight with extra batteries. Wear it on your head when you’re changing tires or working on something  – hands free. Wrap electrical tape around the batteries many times in case you need electrical tape. https://tinyurl.com/yceew9em

8) Tie-wire: You can buy a spool from Harbor – just thick plain wire that can be used to hold a body panel together or broken part if needed. https://tinyurl.com/2p8fhpj5

9) Roll of duct tape – Get Gorilla brand: https://tinyurl.com/yc6yawut

This tape can be used to secure loose body parts or broken pieces from flying around as you make a trail of tears back to the mechanic.

10) Zip Ties (med.)  – Another multi-purpose tool where a less abrasive method may be needed to secure or tie objects.

11) First Aid Kit  – Decent kit for the field where care may be hours away. Even just adding a instant cold pack and Ace bandages. Wearing waders or boots in the mud and rocks can lead to a sprained ankle. Also include: Peptobismol , Advil or any other meds… Zip Lock bag with toilet paper – Remember, pack it in – pack it out.

12) Life Straw Water Filter – Filters water from any source as you drink. https://tinyurl.com/5e9mpnbf

Of course, add all these into a backpack or toolbag with a shoulder strap.

As you add to your off-road kit, share your tips with your fellow club members. If you are traveling as a group, determine who has 4×4 capabilities and make sure to have their phone numbers handy.

In addition, it’s always good to keep a sleeping bag in the back of your vehicle during the trip. It can provide a place for an injured person or keep you warm in the event you may have to spend one or more nights in the car.  https://tinyurl.com/yjcrjcjz

Planning ahead of any issues that may arise will guarantee that regardless of circumstance, EVERY TRIP IS A SUCCESSFUL TRIP!
