This will be our 5th Annual tournament and we hope all of you want to participate. Matt and I were in the first annual event, and we only learned about the casts a few weeks before the tournament. Depending on the number and abilities of the casters, we have a Novice Division, Women’s, Seniors, Super Seniors, and the Open. We’ve had between 15-25 casters and we’re planning on about the same this year.
Whitney Gould from Montana will be here again.
Whitney is the Women’s #1 Spey casting champion in the world. She won at the Worlds in Norway this last August and also set a new Women’s world record! (I think 163′). She has won Spey-O-Rama for several years and watching her cast is amazing. Our LBCC tournament is her favorite event!
We’ll have several casters from the Golden Gate Club and our own group of LBCC casters plus others traveling from Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.
The original organizing committee of Spey casters from LBCC had participated in the Golden Gate Casting Club’s Spey-O-Rama which is the most prestigious Spey event in the world and very competitive. The LBCC casters wanted to have a similar event using some of the same rules but make the event fun and rewarding.
It’s a friendly competition where we cheer and support each other so each of us enjoy the challenge and ultimately become better casters. We all learn from each other because Spey casting isn’t easy and it can be a long journey. All of us want to become better casters so when we go fishing, we are more efficient and become better at fishing. When I started, a friend showed me the ropes but I would come back from a week of fishing and be sore and frustrated. I joined LBCC and started to practice and learn from other casters and since then, I have more fun fishing and catch more fish.
- Dates: Saturday January 21st and Sunday January 22nd.
- We usually start by 9:00am and we’re finished by 12:00-1:00pm but this might change so I’ll update the times closer to the event.
Most of this will be better understood if you can cast with us at LBCC but in a nutshell, there are four different casts and you get three of each within a limited time. We total the longest cast of each of the four casts for an overall score.
- Our pond will be about 24″ deep and we wear chest or waist high waders.
- We will have a buoy line down the middle with floats every five feet and a judge in the water to call out the distances.
- The left and right side will have a delimiter at 40 degrees from the Casting Station because each cast has to have a change of direction.
- When a cast starts on the left side of the pond, to the left of the delimiter, the Birdie has to land on the right side of the buoy line.
- Each caster has a Two Minute warm up and a Six Minute time to complete a total of Twelve casts.
Most divisions will consist of:
- 3 – Right Hand Single Spey casts. Your right hand is on top of the rod and you are casting off your right shoulder.
- 3 – Right Hand Snake Roll. Your right hand is on top of the rod and you are casting off your right shoulder.
- 3 – Left Hand Single Spey casts. Your left hand is on top of the rod and you are casting off your left shoulder.
- 3 – Left Hand Snake Roll. Your left hand is on top of the rod and you are casting off your left shoulder.
- Right Hand Single 85′
- Right Hand Snake 90′
- Left Hand Single 45′
- Left Hand Snake 65′
- Total 285′
